City Acknowledges News Regarding César Chávez; Will Review Street Naming in Coordination with Regional Partners
The City of Monterey Park acknowledges the recent and deeply troubling news regarding César Chávez. As a community, we are taking time to process this information and reflect on its implications.
Avenida César Chávez is a prominent roadway within our City, named in honor of Chávez’s legacy. In light of the recent developments, the City Council recognizes the importance of ensuring that public spaces and place names reflect the values of our community.
Council Member Jose Sanchez has provided the following statement:
"Recent allegations regarding César Chávez have left many in our Monterey Park community and across the nation in disbelief. We stand in firm solidarity with all survivors, including the legendary civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, whose courage continues to guide us. Monterey Park prides itself on being a diverse community that listens to its residents and honors the integrity of those who serve.
The call to rename Avenida César Chávez is not an attempt to erase the history of the farmworker movement; rather, it is an effort to honor that history’s true spirit. As the thoroughfare is iconic in Monterey Park, I am committed to leading a thoughtful renaming process—one that celebrates the enduring legacy of the campesino movement while uplifting the values of accountability and justice we hold today.”
The City Council will begin exploring potential options regarding the future of Avenida César Chávez, including the possibility of a name change. Given that Avenida César Chávez extends beyond our jurisdiction, the City will consider coordination with neighboring agencies, including the City of Los Angeles and East Los Angeles, to ensure a collaborative regional approach.
