MPK News Release headline and sub headline on a blue gray gradient background.

As the holiday season approaches, the City of Monterey Park’s Police and Fire Departments want to remind residents and visitors to prioritize safety during the holidays. Although the holiday season is a time for celebration, it can also bring increased risk of accident, theft and fire hazard. Staying mindful and taking precautions can help ensure a safe and festive holiday season for everyone. Below are some practical tips to keep yourself and your loved ones safe this season.

The Monterey Park Police Department wants residents to prioritize safe shopping habits and home security measures to protect residents from becoming victims of potential thefts and scams. Residents are encouraged to:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and park in a well-lit parking lot.
  • Don’t leave valuables visible in your car and always lock your vehicle.
  • Know when your packages will be delivered and arrange for safe delivery locations.
  • Install a motion camera on your front porch.
  • Research vendors before you make purchases online.
  • Don’t respond to text or e-mails requesting credit card information.

The Monterey Park Fire Department urges residents to focus on fire prevention safety, offering suggestions to protect homes from potential fire hazards associated with holiday decorations:

  • When picking a Christmas tree, ensure the tree is fresh and green.
  • Water the tree daily to ensure it does not dry out.
  • Place trees at least three feet away from any heat sources and ensure the tree does not block exits.
  • Ensure string lights used on the tree are in good working order.
  • Turn off lights and decorations when leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Once the holiday season is over, please recycle your tree to prevent fire hazards. Ware Disposal will collect trees from your curb on your regular trash pick-up day, starting the day after Christmas through the third Saturday in January.

The Monterey Park Police and Fire Departments wish residents and visitors a joyous, safe and festive holiday season.
