What it Means to Be a Member

Serving on a board or commission (collectively, “commissions”) is a high honor that offers a unique opportunity for meaningful public service. Although the specific duties of each commission vary based on its purpose, they generally support the City Council by acting as an additional line of communication between the public and the Council. Commissions provide input by making recommendations, drawing attention to specific issues, encouraging broad community participation in developing alternative goals and solutions, and offering in-depth analyses of matters that will ultimately be decided by the City Council.

Appointments

Commission, committee, and board members are appointed by individual city council members, with the exception of the Library Board of Trustees and the Personnel Board.

  • Members of the Library Board of Trustees are appointed by the city council. They are limited to two, three-year terms in office, but serve until their respective successors are appointed. A one-year waiting period is required following the expiration of the second consecutive term.
  • Members of the Personnel Board are appointed by the city council in the following manner: one member from the community at large; one member from a list of three persons nominated by the non-sworn employees of the city and one member proposed by the city manager.  A majority vote of the Council shall be required.
  •  A majority vote of the council shall be required.

After selection, each commissioner, board or committee member is sworn in by the city clerk and required to sign a loyalty oath at the first available commission, board, or committee meeting.

Agendas, Minutes and Submitting a Written Communication

Board, Commission, or Committee agendas are available on the Agendas & Minutes page. The public may submit a written communication to upcoming meetings by completing an online written communication request form.  Written communication must be submitted 24 hours in advance for regular meetings and 3 hours in advance for special meetings.
