Volunteer Opportunities with the Police Department
The Monterey Park Police Department Community Engagement Bureau offers a number of volunteer opportunities.
Citizen’s Patrol
Citizen Patrol is a dedicated and enthusiastic team of volunteers who are the additional eyes and ears of our police department. They do not take enforcement action, carry weapons, or make arrests. More importantly, they support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activity and carrying out other administratively assigned law enforcement duties. The program is designed for the volunteer who has a great interest in making our community safer. Volunteers receive training in the following:
- Orientation and organization
- Crime prevention
- CPR and first aid
- Driver’s training
- Patrol procedures
- Traffic control
- Use of police radios
- Police codes
- Crossing guard responsibilities
- Safety procedures
- Officer demeanor
Applicant Qualifications & Requirements
- Oral Interview
- Background check
- Procure signed medical statement regarding fitness
- 30 years of age or older
- Good moral character
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- No felony convictions
- Successful completion of Citizen Patrol Academy
- Attend monthly meetings
- Volunteer 16 hours or more per month
- Professionalism

Explorer Program
The Police Explorer Program provides youths (14-21 years) the opportunity to learn leadership skills, responsibility, discipline, and strengthen self-esteem while being introduced to the field of law enforcement. Police explorers have the opportunity to perform non-hazardous duties such as: Ride-Along, traffic control, evidence collection and serve at community events.
