The City of Monterey Park is proud to have been selected to participate in the Special Olympics World Games Host Town program from July 21–24, 2015. Before the Special Olympics World Games began on July 25, 2015, more than 7,000 athletes from 177 countries were welcomed to Southern California through the Host Town program. As many as 100 communities from San Luis Obispo to San Diego had the honor of being selected as an official Host Town.
Delegations arrived four days prior to Opening Ceremonies and joined with their respective host towns to become acclimated to Southern California weather and culture. On July 21, 2015, the cities of Monterey Park and Alhambra co-hosted a delegation of athletes, coaches, and staff from Germany. Both cities planned all details of this arrival including accommodations, meals, travel, training, and entertainment.
The Committee for Host Town Monterey Park presented an arts & music festival to celebrate our delegation on July 23, 2015. A luncheon with international flair was provided through the generosity of various local restaurants. Entertainment from groups such as, but not limited to, Taiko drumming, Hula, and cover bands displayed the vibrant and diverse culture and history of Monterey Park.
In partnership with Luminarias Restaurant, the Consulate General of Germany in Los Angeles co-hosted a dinner for the entire delegation on the evening of July 23, 2015. Monterey Park showcased our culture through food and entertainment along with a formal flag presentation by Monterey Park Police Department and a Dragon dance performance.
The Committee sought support from community businesses and individuals. The budget set to host a delegate is $100 per day. Sponsorship opportunities such as flag banners and other recognition were developed to support the event. The committee is also sold bracelets at the City Clerk's Office for $5 with proceeds benefitting the Host Town Program, Special Olympics, and The Leo Clubs of Southern California.
The Special Olympics World Games 2015 is the biggest sporting event in Los Angeles since the 1984 Summer Olympics Games. Monterey Park has a history of involvement with welcoming the international athletic community having hosted field hockey at East Los Angeles College for the 1984 Olympic Games.
"The Host Town program is an exciting way for Southern California locals to open our doors and show the athletes and coaches from around the world our hospitality and our culture," said Patrick McClenahan, President and Chief Executive officer of LA2015, the Games Organizing Committee. "This is an important part of the World Games experience and a truly meaningful way for different communities to be part of the Games and create lasting memories for our visiting athletes."
As a Host Town, Monterey Park will entertain, accommodate, and introduce their delegation to the culture of the city. As part of the program, California State University Los Angeles will provide housing accommodations and training facilities for all participating athletes.
"It's a great honor to be a host city for the Special Olympics here in the city of Monterey Park. It is an exciting opportunity for us all here in the city and we are looking forward to games and all the festivities!," said Monterey Park Mayor Hans Liang.
"We're really excited about the opportunity to be a Host Town and get the honor and privilege of meeting and interacting with the athletes," said Chief of Police Jim Smith.
